Next Door Neighbor

Karen Pugh: Doll Doctor
Reporter: Lisa Spicer
Photographer: Andy Grossman
aired Sunday January 18, 1998

JUST ABOUT EVERY LITTLE GIRL HAS A SPECIAL DOLL THEY HUG MORE THAN ALL THE OTHERS. BUT WHEN THOSE DOLLS ARE HUGGED TO PIECES, YOU NEED TO CALL THE "DOLL DOCTOR". THAT'S WHO LISA SPICER VISITS ON THIS WEEKS EDITION OF NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR.

LISA SPICER: "KAREN PUGH IS AS EXCITED ABOUT FIXING THIS DOLL AS ANY LITTLE GIRL WOULD BE GETTING IT BACK IN ONE PIECE."

Karen Pugh / Next Door Neighbor: "This doll was probably so loved by some little girl."

SPICER: "KAREN PUGH IS A CERTIFIED DOLL ARTISAN, BUT YOU CAN CALL HER THE DOLL DOCTOR."

Karen Pugh: "This is my important box, this is my doctor's kit. I have everything in here because I never throw anything out."

SPICER: "AND KAREN WOULD NEVER THROW OUT A DOLL, EVEN IF IT COMES TO HER IN BITS AND PIECES, OR ARMS AND LEGS. UNLIKE ALL THE KINGS HORSES AND ALL THE KINGS MEN, KAREN WILL WORK TO PUT EVERY DOLL BACK TOGETHER AGAIN."

Karen Pugh: "Very rarely do I get anything in one piece. If I do it's like this with the head attached but it's really lose and it jiggles."

Karen Pugh: "This doll belongs to a lady in Virginia. It was the last doll her daddy got her. They brought it to me with a picture of her and the doll and what we're going to do with this baby is make it look like that again. (Spicer: And you can do this?) I sure can, it may take me a while."

SPICER: "WORKING AT THE DOLL HOSPITAL, KAREN PATCHES TOGETHER TODAYS DOLLS AND BRINGS CHILDHOOD MEMORIES BACK TO LIFE."

Karen Pugh: "I have one of those jobs where I make people happy to see the look on someone's face when they come to pick up their doll. It makes me feel good that I can make people happy because of what my hands can do."

SPICER: "FIXING DOLLS IS A SKILL KAREN LEARNED ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, ALL BECAUSE SHE COUDLN'T FIND ANYONE TO FIX ONE OF HER OWN DOLLS."

Karen Pugh: "I had two dolls that were my grandmothers and I couldn't find anybody to fix them. And I fixed my Nanna's dolls. They are sitting in my dining room and every morning when I walk by it makes me think about Nanna and it gives me a good feeling. And if a doll can do that and I can do that, then I am giving a wonderful gift."

SPICER: "AND THESE ARE GIFTS THAT KAREN WILL FIX SO THEY CAN COME OUT OF THE CLOSET AND ONCE AGAIN BE CHERISHED BY A LITTLE GIRL."

IF YOU HAVE A NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR YOU THINK WE SHOULD MEET, YOU CAN WRITE TO LISA AT THIS ADDRESS: SEND A NAME AND NUMBER TO NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR, CARE OF WBOC, POST OFFICE BOX 2057, SALISBURY, MARYLAND 21802.
